covid-19 and mainstreets
COVID-19 has reinforced the role played by mainstreets as the economic, social and cultural heart of their communities. These are critical civic places that 'punch above their weight', impacting every member of society through the goods and services they provide as well as the social and cultural interactions we all enjoy.
Whilst this is a very challenging time for mainstreets and the tapestry of small businesses and community organisations that call mainstreets home, we are heartened by the journey of rediscovery that many people have taken with their neighbourhood mainstreet. The outpouring of support for small, local mainstreet businesses has been evidence of their place in the community.
It will take disciplined community social distancing measures, flexibility of approach and the passage of time to move past the current crisis. Mainstreet SA extends our solidarity to everyone connected with mainstreets, and as an organisation we remain committed to supporting mainstreets, precincts and town centres through this transition and towards a new chapter.
