In this episode of Mainstreet Masters, we are talking about the significant changes that have happened to the Philadelphia City Center over the past 30 years. The city was in trouble and first impressions were poor – dirty pavements, graffiti- covered streets, a public environment in disarray, broken car windows, aggressive panhandling - all sending a message that no one cares; that no one is in charge. But how and why did it all change?
Paul Levy is the immediate past CEO and President of the Center City District Management Group and City Development Corporation and has been involved with the City management over most of this period and has been awarded for his leadership in guiding the city to a better place.
Paul discusses with us how the Strategic Plans were put in place and how he gained the support of property owners and businesses. The foundation of their plan was based on clean and safe and soon blossomed into events and marketing campaigns such as the popular Restaurant Week. Mainstreet Masters with Shelley Cox from The Regional Collective, Tanunda SA
In this episode we are talking about the importance of small businesses as the economic and community drivers of towns and regional mainstreets with an expert in the field Shelley from The Regional Collective based in Tanunda, South Australia. Shelley tells us about her experience with her own small business in the regional town of Tanunda and how she worked to balance family life and business life and her advice for other small business owners.

Mainstreet Masters with Shane Clarke from VQ Ireland
Shane Clarke is the first Director of Operations of VQ (previously the Victorian Quarter) in Cork City Centre Ireland. Prior to this, Shane was CEO of Nano Nagle Place in Cork and Deputy Director of Team London Bridge. In this episode, Shane talks to us about his move from Nano Nagle Place to the VQ and some of the similar priorities with previous roles in the UK.
The special focus on greening the environment is a key priority for Shane who created his own consultancy Garden-City-Culture. Team London Bridge has delivered many projects consistent with the clean – green – safe themes and Shane explains how the ‘Fresh Air Squares’ program came about and he shows us how adaptable the squares are for mainstreets, precincts and limited spaces.
Shane also talks about marketing and promoting the unique character of precincts using examples of Nano Nagle Place in Cork and the London Bridge Riverfront Character area near the Thames.
Mainstreet Masters with Kay Matthews – Ontario Business Improvement Area Assoc OBIAA Canada
In this episode of Mainstreet Masters, we are talking to Kay Matthews, Executive Director of the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association in Canada about trends in mainstreets and town centres across Ontario.
The OBIAA supports Business Improvement Area groups and their 100,000+ businesses across Ontario. In 1970 a group of businesses took matters into the own hands when created a defined business area that operated independently. The Bloor West Business Improvement was created in 1970 and was the first business area that operated with business endorsement and the model has been duplicated in over 3000 mainstreets, towns and Cities worldwide.
Kay also tells us about the importance of good governance, professional management and Council support to make a mainstreet successful.
Mainstreet Masters with Gianna Murphy, Renew Adelaide
In this episode of Mainstreet Masters, we talk with Gianna Murphy, the CEO of Renew Adelaide. Renew Adelaide are a small and passionate team partnering with the property industry, government and communities to find interesting vacant spaces and connect them with entrepreneurs.
The program started in 2010 and has been incredibly successful, in fact they recently facilitated a location for their 300th small independent business. Gianna explains how they help businesses set up in a vacant shopfront so that they can test their product and develop their business growth plan to include a more permanent location. There have been many success stories and they have also learnt from challenges across the journey.
Gianna explains how Renew Adelaide is structured so that they remain flexible when faced with challenges. In addition Gianna and her dynamic Board led by Nick Begakis continue to link property owners with entrepreneurs get them off to a good start.
Mainstreet Masters with Mileyka Burgos-Flores, CEO of the Allapattah Collaborative CDC, Miami
We speak with Mileyka Burgos-Flores CEO of the Allapattah Collaborative CDC in Miami in this episode of Mainstreet Masters. Mileyka recently won a very prestigious Main Street America Award – the Mary Means Leadership Award that recognises individuals that demonstrate outstanding leadership in preservation based economic development and commercial district revitalisation.
Mileyka talks about the link between identity, culture, pride and leadership and how a collective ownership model was developed. Mileyka harnessed the community energy in Little Santa Domingo to support the many small businesses that faced eviction because their building was being sold and redeveloped.
Instead of the business owners disappearing Mileyka and the Allapattah CDC established the Small Business Cohort to support them.

In this episode of Mainstreet Masters, we are talking to Larry Ng, a Former Group Director for the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), a Former Commissioner General for the Singapore Pavilion Expo 2020 in Dubai and a Former Prize Secretary of the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize.
Larry’s achievements are impressive and we delve into some of the strategies and actions Singapore is delivering to become a City in Nature. One of these strategies is to plant 1,000,000 trees before 2030. Larry tells us about apartment designs across the City, linking their parks to each other and how to complete a cross country Singapore marathon.
A major achievement was taking 80,000 plants and trees to the middle of the Dubai desert to set up an award-winning exhibition.
In this Mainstreet Masters episode we are talking about mainstreet and town centre management with the former CEO of the UK Association of Town & City Management and experienced place management consultant Martin Blackwell. Martin has extensive knowledge of day and night best practice place management. He has been involved in management of Market Towns in the UK and larger cities including Norwich.
Martin also specialises in business improvement districts and he tells us how BIDs benefit the local communities they serve. Businesses and property owners benefit in addition to the local municipalities (Councils) because the create a new partnership that delivers for all.

Parnell is a beautiful mainstreet village located on the edge of Auckland and is known for its wonderful boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Being close to the City has advantages and disadvantages and Cheryl tells us about the unique position that Parnell has.
Parnell is a very successful business improvement district with an independent business board and a consistent source of funding that enables management to deliver a range of programs that benefit businesses, property owners and the community.

Diana is the CEO of the River District Association in Danville Virginia and is a Great American Main Street Award winner.
She has been responsible for an amazing turnaround through many new initiatives such as the Dream Launch Bootcamp to foster and support new independent businesses and the Ignite Business Pitch. Matt is responsible for driving the organization's field service initiatives including the development and delivery of technical services for Main Street America and Urban Main programs, directing the Center’s research agenda, as well as the recently launched New Business Development work to focus on national partnerships, brand leveraging and new business growth areas.
