Mainstreet SA is delighted to announce details for the 2019 Mainstreet SA Conference and Awards, supported by our Host Partner, the City of Adelaide, and Venue Partner, Lot Fourteen, on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th October 2019.
As the flagship event for Mainstreet SA, and now integrated with the annual Mainstreet SA Awards, this event is likely to see the largest single gathering of South Australian mainstreet makers to date.
The 2019 program includes a panel discussion session and a conference networking dinner featuring the Mainstreet SA Awards on Thursday 10th October, followed by a full day session of presentations at Lot Fourteen on Friday 11th October. The two-day program includes international perspectives as well as local success stories and is sure to stimulate robust discussion as we all strive to ensure that our mainstreets are “Designed for Life”.
This is THE mainstreet event to attend in 2019 if you are keen on supporting, activating and strengthening your mainstreet, precinct or town centre.

Cheryl Adamson
MANAGING THE BULLIES AND THE SQUEAKY WHEELS AND THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
After successfully running her own marketing consultancies specialising in retail and shopping centre developments in South Africa for 25 years, Cheryl is now the General Manager of the Parnell Business Association representing over 1,100 businesses in the Parnell precinct. Cheryl is an expert in marketing in the retail environment and managing multi-stakeholder engagement, with her goal to make Parnell the most sought after Auckland City fringe precinct in which to do business.
Cheryl will be talking about the value of the BID model in managing the bullies and the squeaky wheels in the stakeholder environment. She will be delivering her opinion on the healthy tension between BID’s and Council and will use two case studies of Council Controlled Organisations (CCO’s) to demonstrate the outcome of both a positive and a negative relationship with Town Centre Management.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS
THURSDAY 10TH OCTOBER
MANAGING MAINSTREET DISRUPTION
Mainstreets are constantly evolving with lots of steady and incremental change over time. Sometimes the change is more dramatic resulting in a period of disruption, not just to the street itself but to trading conditions for businesses. For traders it can be easy for the long-term benefits of a large project to be overshadowed by the immediate concern about survival. This session will tackle mainstreet disruption, working with traders and stakeholders to maximise buy-in, and effective communication strategies to minimise the perception that the mainstreet is closed for business.
Panel Members:
David Bailey - Senior Policy Planner at City of Adelaide (Moderator)
Andrew Wallace - Adelaide West End Association and the University of South Australia
Craig Burton - Manager, City Growth at City of Adelaide
Akarra Klingberg - Business and Economic Development Coordinator at City of Unley
Con Maios - Chairperson, Jetty Road Mainstreet Committee
FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER
MAINSTREETS AND SMALL BUSINESS
Nowhere are small businesses more essential than in the mainstreets that make our neighbourhoods great. Small business retailers create jobs, spur economic growth and serve their communities and customers in new and innovative ways. This panel will explore the role of small business in mainstreets, and how to ignite the small business spark in your mainstreet to add character and keeping people coming back.
Panel Members:
Simon Millcock - Ceo of Legatus Group and Chair of EDA SA (Moderator)
Martin Haese – CEO of Business SA
John Chapman - Small Business Commissioner
Carin Waterson – General Manager of Food and Wine Collective
Gavin Williams - Owner of Matilda Bookshop, Stirling
FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER
S-M-XL-MS: LEARNING FROM BIG RETAIL
In a follow up to their recently published research on the status of suburban Mainstreets, The Property Council’s Retail and Mainstreets Committee will present a researched thought piece on reconciling the tension that has emerged between big retail and bespoke mainstreets. This session will bring the hard-to-ask and often misunderstood strategies of small, medium and extra-large main street operators to the forefront in what will be a spirited Q&A experience.
